Vocal Groups
Chancel Choir
Open to any youth and adults who are interested, this group sings anthems and
congregational music in both of the morning worship services and for special
services. Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings, 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Choir
Room, during which time the choir works on anthems and choral techniques, and
shares in devotional and prayer experiences.
Voices of Grace (Women’s Ensemble)
This group rehearses on the first and third Thursday of the month, 5:45-6:45
p.m. in the Choir Room. Under the direction of Connie Hepler, the women sing at
nursing homes & special events.
K-1 Grades
As part of the Evening Fellowship Activity from 6:00-7:30 p.m., the K-1 Graders
meet in the Choir Room for music activities from 7:00-7:30 p.m. Activities
include singing, playing music games, and preparing music for special worship
events. The segment concludes with a devotion and prayer time. Leaders: Shelley
Litz (music) and Ellen Davis (devotion & prayer).
2-5 Grades
As part of the Evening Fellowship Activity from 6:00-7:30 p.m., the 2-5 Graders
meet in the Choir Room for music activities from 6:00-6:30 p.m. Activities
include playing music games, learning hymns and choruses, and preparing music
for special worship events. The segment concludes with a devotion and prayer
time.
Youth Singers
For 6th-12th graders, this group rehearses once a month on Sunday evenings,
5:00-5:30 p.m. in the Choir Room. The youth teach new songs to the congregation
about once a month. (Rehearsal dates TBA.)
Instrumental Groups
Annabells
This group is for preschool children age three and older (two-year-olds are
welcome with the participation of a parent). It meets on the first and third
Sundays of the month, 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Preschool Room. Activities include
playing bells and instruments, and having a snack and recreation time. Leader:
Liz Manetta.
Beginner Handbell Choir
Open to 4th graders and older, this choir teaches handbell techniques and
music-reading skills. New ringers are welcome! All members must commit to
participate for a minimum of an entire semester (September through December
and/or January through May). Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings,
5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Choir Room, and include physical warm-ups, technique
exercises, and work on handbell music. The choir plays in worship 4-6 times a
year.
Youth Handbell Choir
Open to 6th graders and older, youth with previous ringing experience are
invited to join this ensemble, which participates in worship about four times a
year. Rehearsals are held on Monday afternoons, 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Choir
Room, and include physical warm-ups, technique exercises, and work on handbell
music. Youth who have not played in the Beginner Handbell Choir at Saint
John’s–Newberry must meet with the Director before joining.
Chancel Handbell Choir
Adults with ringing experience are invited to join these groups as openings
become available. Currently, openings are available for the 2008-2009 year. New
ringers must meet with the Director before joining. Rehearsals are held on
Wednesday evenings, 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Choir Room. The groups play in worship
every 4-6 weeks and for special services.
Church Band
Open to instrumentalists of all levels of experience, this group provides music
for special occasions during the year. Rehearsals are held once a month on
Sunday evenings, 5:30-6:30 p.m. (specific dates TBA). Director: Dawn McCandless.
Flute Choir and Other Instrumental Groups
Short-term groups are organized on occasion as interested is expressed. The
Flute Choir is directed by Anne Keely, Director of the School of the Arts. Other
groups have included a Youth String Ensemble, and a Youth Wind Ensemble. School of the Arts Saint John's is privileged to offer a School of the Arts as one of its music and arts ministries. For more information contact the School of the Arts office at 327-5575. Director: Anne Keely | |
